🌻 Ivy Place Berry & Flower Farm — September Newsletter

Hi friends! September at The Ivy Place is that sweet handoff from summer blooms to fall flavors. We’re keeping it simple, beautiful, and very pick-your-own friendly. Bring your people and wander around the fields a bit. 💛

🌸 Flowers First

Cut-Your-Own Blooms
Zinnias, celosia, cosmos and more are still putting on a show. Grab a friend and wander the rows to build your own bouquet.

Bouquets To-Go
Prefer ready-made? We’ll have fresh, farm-designed bouquets at the stand and at the Waxhaw Farmers Market (Saturdays, 9–noon) while supplies last.

Interested in a custom bouquet or got to have one or five for a special occasion? Reach out here to order.

Field Tip
Strip leaves below the water line. A fresh re-cut at home = longer-lasting vase life.

🍇 Muscadines Are Here!!

Our muscadines & scuppernongs are coloring up beautifully. Lots available now. We expect to have them 2 more weeks with August 30th being the peak.

How to tell they’re ready: they’re not rock-hard — ripe muscadines have a little give when you squeeze them.

Prepping for 2026: Strawberry Beds in the Works

We’re already in full swing getting ready for next spring’s strawberry season. Here’s a peek behind the scenes:

  • Beds Built: The 3rd week of August we made our new strawberry beds.
  • Mulching: We’ve been busy mulching the rows — a 9-day job! Mulching is the big reason our fields aren’t muddy in the spring and why weeds are easier to manage (we don’t use herbicides).
  • What’s Next: Tidying up row ends and setting up drip irrigation.
  • Planting: We’ll be prepped and ready to plant in early October.
  • Layout: Beds are designed similar to this season’s, with a few tweaks.

We’re putting in the work now so you can enjoy clean rows, healthy plants, and those juicy berries come April–May 2026. 🍓

Check out a quick video showing how it works.

🫐 August Was for Blueberry Pruning

Whew — August was a big month for pruning blueberries. We did a mix of hedging plus a huge amount of hand pruning, especially on the larger bushes. While we had a wonderful blueberry season, our later varieties with the larger bushes had gotten so thick it was tough to pick. We thinned them out significantly, and the end result looks great. By pruning earlier, the bushes will have time to put on a bit of new growth before cooler weather arrives — setting us up for another strong season next year.

🌻 Thank for an Epic Sunflower Evening on August 27th

Wow, y’all showed up with smiles, kids, grandparents, friends and cameras plus a few trashcans and buckets. Thank you for walking the ¼-mile to the sunflower block, picking armfuls, and sharing the joy. We loved seeing your photos and can’t wait to do more little kindnesses like this in the future. We will see if the next round of sunflowers work out.

February Newsletter- The Ivy Place Berry Farm Dear Farm Family, Holy Antarctica, y'all. What a month January was! We started out with some beautiful 78-degree days, only to be plunged down to 14 degrees less than a week later. If you’ve lived around here for a while, you know our Carolina weather likes to keep us on our toes, but this was a wild one even for us. Honestly, we needed some cold weather to keep the plants dormant, but we’d sure prefer it stayed above that 15-degree mark. Late...

January Newsletter- The Ivy Place Berry Farm Dear Farm Family, If you were to drive past the farm this morning, you’d see a field that looks like it’s at least half asleep. We often get asked, "Are you worried about the plants in this cold?" The truth is, we actually welcome it! To give you the sweetest harvest possible, our berries require what we call "Chill Hours." Think of it as the farm’s internal alarm clock. Each plant needs a specific number of hours between 32 and 45 degrees to...

December Newsletter- The Ivy Place Berry Farm ❄️ Ivy Place Berry & Flower Farm — December Newsletter Hi friends! As 2025 winds down, we’re feeling grateful for another beautiful year on the farm. The early winter weather has been just what we needed — a little cold, a little damp — helping the plants rest and recharge. Most of all, we’re thankful for you — our family, friends, and farm community who supported us all year long. We’re already hard at work preparing for the 2026 Farm Season, and...
